Professional Development

I am committed to ongoing growth as a teacher and pedagogue so that I can effectively meet the changing needs of my students and the changing conditions in which they learn. I work hard to stay up to date with research in the field so that my teaching practices reflect new knowledge and so that I continue to innovate in the classroom. I think of myself as a lifelong learner, something I hope to inspire in my students, and I model this through ongoing professional development.

The conferences, workshops, certifications, and other learning experiences included here represent selected examples of my ongoing professional development.

Current Certification Work

I was selected to participate in the 2026–27 ACUE certification program, a cohort-based program in evidence-based college teaching, offered through the Ohio Association of Community Colleges. Upon successful completion, I will earn ACUE’s nationally recognized Certification in Effective Teaching.

Current Areas of Study

Directed Self-Placement

I am currently researching directed self-placement (DSP) models for first-year writing courses at community colleges. Placement models have evolved considerably over the past few decades, and there’s a growing national movement toward DSP, which guides students in making informed decisions about what English placement will best support their success. Studies of writing placement suggest that directed self-placement models show promise in community college contexts. DSP also emphasizes student agency, which in my experience is key to learning and persistence in college.

AI and Writing Pedagogy

I am interested in studies that examine how different uses of AI affect learning and in scholarship on teaching AI literacy in writing courses. Research on the relationship between AI use and learning is just beginning to emerge, and there’s still much that’s unknown though it does seem clear that how we use AI makes a significant difference. I am currently participating in a virtual reading and discussion of the newly released Norton Guide to AI-Aware Teaching and applying what I’ve learned through my research to my teaching.
