Hunger, Blossoms

My body remembers
traces, moments, inarticulations:
the smell of cinnamon,
orange swirls, a kitchen’s
withholdings – tiramisu,
peanut butter blossoms,
licking batter from a
spoon; an apron snug
around my belly, your pinches
of touch measured
in flour and sugar, salt and semisweet
chocolate; nearness,
tender as you roll
and mix, sieve, and whip
sticks of butter, honey,
hunger, tartar, tears,
drops of extract
in a batter, hugged close
like my arms around your hips,
your bluish mixing bowl
heavy in my smallish
arms, heavy against my impatient
hands, my eager
belly; in the body’s memory
a bruise swelled:
shimmered salt, warmth,
wish —
